The A. H. Church Collection of Japanese Sword-Guards (Tsuba)
An unpublished catalogue of the A. H. Church collection of Japanese sword-guards (tsuba) by Albert James Koop.
The founder of the Kikugawa School, K. Hisahide (or Nampo), was a pupil of Chidzuka Hisanori, of the foregoing group, but had previously studied under Kiku Chōbei Muneyoshi, the third of the group of artists famous for their treatment of chrysanthemum (kiku). Hisahida had some half-dozen pupils.
Someya Masanobu originally worked in Ise province, afterwards removing to Yedo. His son Tomonobu acquired considerable fame by inventing a new and quite unmistakable style in low-relief modelling of landscapes on soft-metal guards, which he designed for himself. He had studied under the painter Tani Bunchō (1765-1842).
