The A. H. Church Collection of Japanese Sword-Guards (Tsuba)

Low relief with bold iroye incrustation depicting two Chinese heroes (2nd-3rd century). On the the larger guard [EAX.10927] Ch'ang Fei (Chōhi), mounted and in full armour (though bareheaded), crosses a bridge over a torrent; on the other [EAX.10928], Chao Yün (Chōun), with the boy A Tou safe in his bosom, reins in his horse at the explosion of a bomb in his path; near each is a large tree (in continuation of the subject) at the back of the guard. Signed: Yoshikage [Japanese text]. (Unrecorded.)
