Yuan Shikai declared himself emperor in 1915. One of his acts of authority was to commission porcelain from the imperial kilns at Jingdezhen but since his rule lasted only 82 days, the order was scarcely fulfilled. These rare examples were part of it.

Vitreous coating applied to the surface of a ceramic to make it impermeable or for decorative effect.
Ceramic material composed of kaolin, quartz, and feldspar which is fired to a temperature of c.1350-1400⁰c. The resulting ceramic is vitreous, translucent, and white in colour.
