This is the second of three surviving volumes from a five volume Qing dynasty (1645-1911) edition of The Mustard Seed Garden Manual of Painting. This particular opening illustrates the method for painting reeds and rushes. These reeds appear in the opening section of Xu Bing’s scroll. He has reproduced only the first four characters of the text, which discusses the role of reeds and rushes in paintings of fishing and fishermen.
