Discover exquisite embroideries, dyed silk and velvet panels, tapestries, and appliqué works
The design of this panel is based on a painting by the artist Itō Jakuchū (1716-1800), from his celebrated 30-scroll set, the ‘Colourful Realm of Living Beings’. Originally held at the Kyoto temple of Shōkokuji, the set entered the imperial collections in 1889 and was occasionally exhibited in Tokyo thereafter. The paintings became a popular subject of Japanese textiles in the early 1900s. Note the highly skilful cutting of the velvet. (Exhibition number 40)
