Chinese Prints 1950-2006 in the Ashmolean Museum

My work is a result of rethinking the traditional Chinese spirit and the state of urban life. It has also embodied the course of my life in its current state.

Zhang Guanghui graduated from the Printmaking Department of the Hubei Academy of Fine Arts (HAFA) in 1984, and further studied printmaking at the Central Academy of Fine Arts in 1989. He is presently the head of the Printmaking Department at HAFA. His prints are ultimately influenced by the mysterious Chu culture of southern China during the Pre-Qin period (770–221 BC), but he seeks to reinterpret his perception of the Chu culture into modern visual language. His recent woodcuts often show an intricate mixture of texture and symbols with overlapping blocks, depicting the psychological reality of daily life in the modern world.
