    The A. H. Church Collection of Japanese Sword-Guards (Tsuba)

    On each face are asters and orchids in low relief against a fret-cut diaper of swastika sharacter (rinzu); narrow raised border.

    Signed: Sunagawa Masanori (as no.702 [EAX.10702]) kore wo chiribamu ([Japanese text], "engraved this"), Chōshū no dzu wo motte ([Japanese text], "after a Chōshū design").

    This signature is interesting as classifying the design by the school (Group XIV) which seems to have originated it; this is unusual, though acknowledgments of a design to an individual artist are comparatively common.
