Decorative application of metal sheeting (generally of gold or silver) where the iron ground is first cross-hatched and the metal burnished on.

The A. H. Church Collection of Japanese Sword-Guards (Tsuba)
Autumn débris (fukiyose design) - a twig of oak with two leaves and acorns, a maple and a Salisburia leaf, a pine-cone and two needles, the last, with the twig, serving as the border; many touches of gold nunome.
Signed: CHNJ Sakunoshin Tomohisa (compare No.351 [EAX.10351], but not nearly so bold a signature as on that example).
Guards of this design are fairly common, being often found with "signatures" of artists of various schools (e.g., Seiriūken Yeiju - probably bogus).
