Autumn Forest at Dawn

  • loan
  • Description

This painting was produced by Fang Jizhong (1923-1987). Fang is celebrated for his portrayal of goats. Chinese critics have spoken of a distinct Shaanxi School of landscape painting based at the Xi’an Academy in northwest China, with Fang and his teacher Zhao Wangyun (1906-1977) being the leading representatives. This painting, however, doesn’t show such a strong regional character, perhaps because of the subject matter the artist chose, of a deer in an autumn forest. It was painted in autumn of 1979 and inscribed by the artist to Khoan (1919-2003) and Michael Sullivan (1916-2013) in Xi’an. The inscription reads ‘Autumn Forest at Dawn. Painted by Jizhong in autumn of 1979 in Chang’an. For Madam Wu Huan and Mr. Michael Sullivan to correct and as a memento of their visit to China.’
