    The A. H. Church Collection of Japanese Sword-Guards (Tsuba)

    Openwork completely in the round, within slender border; a Chinese emperor seated in his beehive-like chariot, from which his attacker rides away with lowered halberd; above is a dragon. Signed: Mito no jū Yoshihisa [Japanese text] saku.

    Wu Wang, founder of the Chou Dynasty of China, in 1122 B.C. led his forces against those of Shang. Attacked by Fang Hsiang with a spear, he was saved by the appearance of "a golden eight-clawed dragon".
