kufic

  • kufic

    A term denoting various styles of angular Arabic script. Emerged in the early centuries of Islam, kufic soon became the preferred hand to copy holy texts.

    Catalogue of Islamic Seals and Talismans

    Cornelian; plain-convex bezel (but the back face has triangular facets); rectangular, but now broken on one side; frontal angle slightly cut. Three lines of kufic script; the two superior lines are larger than the inferior one; without dots.

    (1) al-Ṣā. . . xxxx الصا
    (2) . . . xxلك لله
    (3) al-Ḥasan b. . . . [؟]xx الحسن بن

    Above the ṣād (?) in the first line, there is one star consisting of three short crossed strokes.
