    The Barlow Collection

The box has nearly straight, somewhat tapering sides, a flat base and a shallow domed cover. The cover is moulded in relief with a pair of phoenixes, arranged in yinyang fashion, looking at each other, and completely filling the surface. They are depicted with crests, small wing-like feathers at the neck, spread wings and long tail feathers. The somewhat coarse white body bears a translucent glaze with a faint bluish tinge, which ends above the base, leaves the base free and only thinly covers the inside of the cover. A diagonal stroke has been incised across both parts to indicate proper alignment.
