Vitreous coating applied to the surface of a ceramic to make it impermeable or for decorative effect.

A semi-fluid clay applied to a ceramic before glazing either to coat the surface or for decorative effect.

Ceramic material made of clay which is fired to a temperature of c.1200-1300⁰c and is often buff or grey in colour.

The Barlow Collection
The deep U-shaped bowl has a straight foot and a shallow domed cover with an everted rim. The light buff-coloured stoneware bears a white slip and a transparent glaze. The slip ends well above the foot and covers only the uppermost part of the inside. The lowest part of the sides and most of the inside, where the glaze is applied directly onto the body, appear in a contrasting light grey. The underside of the cover, foot and base are left in the biscuit. The bowl has grit adhering in the centre.
