    The Barlow Collection

This classic shape is in the West often referred to as a yenyen (or yanyan) vase, but the term that does not seem to have a Chinese equivalent.

The piece is heavily potted, with a baluster-shaped body and trumpet-shaped neck, a raised collar at the shoulder, and the wide foot has a broad chamfered edge. The neck is decorated with horizontal ribs, the upper part of the body is incised with an undulating lotus scroll, and the lower part carved in relief with overlapping lotus petals with fine combing. The light green glaze has in the lower part misfired to an olive-brown, the unglazed footring is reddish brown.
