The Newberry Collection of Islamic Embroideries

The fragment is completely covered with parallel bands containing a variety of designs, including S- and arrow-shapes, hexagons filled with diamonds, stars, and stylized plants. All designs are embroidered in stepped double running stitches.

The great variety of designs suggests that the fragment was part of a sampler. There is a selvedge along one side. The textile has been sewn onto a cloth backing. Much of the embroidery has lost its colour.
