The Newberry Collection of Islamic Embroideries

A band is filled with a continuous vine scroll and tendrils that form an interlace pattern.

The design is created by very finely cut strips of leather appliquéd with flax and silk thread. The appliqué sewing emphasizes the design, the background is gilded. The fragment was part of a leather strip, possibly once part of a book cover. The paper backing on the reverse does not suggest a garment function.
