Modern Chinese Paintings: The Reyes Collection in the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford

Cui Zifan from Shandong province was a pupil of Qi Baishi and after 1956 became a leading member of the Beijing Painting Academy, known for his free brushwork style and use of colour. The pink, turquoise and yellow in this painting bring a contemporary feel to the traditional subject of goldfish, a genre established shortly after they were first bred for ornamental purposes in the eleventh century.
