The A. H. Church Collection of Japanese Sword-Guards (Tsuba)
Relief modelling with bold iroye incrustation and katakiri engraving; on the right, seated under a pine-tree (shown mainly at the back) is Takeshiuchi-no-sukune, the aged minister of the Empress Jingō, receiving the two tide-ruline gems offered by a kneeling demon, the servant of the Sea God. Signed: Kigōdō [Japanese text] Naoyoshi [Japanese text] with kakihan [Japanese text].
Probably Nara (Toshinaga) work and therefore properly belonging to Group XXXVIII.
