The Newberry Collection of Islamic Embroideries

A tiraz textile with a light brown inscription which reads "bismillah al-rahman al-rahim al-hamdu lillah yumn li 'abdallah Abi Muhammad al-imam al-Muktafi billah amir al-mu'minin ayyadahu allah mima 'umila bi-misr sanat arba'a tis'in mi'atayn" (in the name of God, the compassionate, the merciful, praise to God, success to the servant of God, Abu Muhammad, the Imam, al-Muktafi billah, Commander of the faithful, may God strengthen him, this is what was made in Egypt in the year 294).

There are remains of sewing thread along one short side of the fabric. The inscription dates the textile to 907 AD.
