glaze, stoneware

  • glaze

    Vitreous coating applied to the surface of a ceramic to make it impermeable or for decorative effect.

  • stoneware

    Ceramic material made of clay which is fired to a temperature of c.1200-1300⁰c and is often buff or grey in colour.

    The Barlow Collection

    The large ovoid jar is very heavily potted, resting on a short splayed, solid foot and surmounted by a short flared (replaced) neck. The smooth buff-coloured stoneware is glazed in a dark brown and covered with overall light blue to beige-coloured splashes, running down in uneven streaks, on one side almost obscuring the brown glaze underneath, but leaving it largely plain on the reverse. The lowest part and base have been left free of glaze, the body has fired a glossy dark brown on one side and a buff colour on the other, while it is grey on the base.

    A similarly glazed jar fragment from the Dayaodian kiln site in Neixiang, Henan province, is published in the exhibition catalogue Ceramic Finds from Henan, The University Museum and Art Gallery, Hong Kong, 1997, cat.no.94.
