    Hiroshige’s Views of Tokyo

    It may be that this famous street was actually laid out to take advantage of the view of the distant Fuji, no doubt more often visible then than now. Hiroshige has used western style perspective to exaggerate this view. The shops are marked with the crest of the Mistui, from which is derived the name Mitsukoshi. The shop on the left is today Mitsukoshi, that on the right, the Mitsui Bank.
