    The A. H. Church Collection of Japanese Sword-Guards (Tsuba)

    Square centre set anglewise and surrounded by four contiguous bands of [curling brackets, see Fig. 11] shape set crosswise, all having gilt roped edges; the square covered on each face with minute designs in gold wire inlay, mostly of heraldic import, on a ground sprinkled with tiny gold circles, and here and there a small piece of silver.

    Early 18th century (much worn).
