earthenware, glaze, luted

earthenware
Ceramic material made of clay which is fired to a temperature of c.1000-1200⁰c. The resulting ceramic is non-vitreous and varies in colour from dark red to yellow.

Vitreous coating applied to the surface of a ceramic to make it impermeable or for decorative effect.

The fusion of parts of ceramics using dilute clay slip.

The Barlow Collection
The figure has been roughly moulded in two halves, showing the animal standing on an unevenly shaped plinth, its right legs placed forward, its pointed snout raised and somewhat turned to the left, the long ears depicted in relief, the eyes, skin folds and some hair incised, the rib cage of the slender body indicated by parallel lines, the tail crudely modelled. The animal is covered with a brownish-amber glaze, but the space between the legs, which was not cut out, has been left unglazed, revealing the cream-coloured body. The figure is open underneath and hollow.
