  • shakudō

    alloy of copper and gold, patinated to a dark blue-black colour

  • shibuichi

    alloy of copper and silver, patinated to a dull grey-green colour

    The A. H. Church Collection of Japanese Sword-Guards (Tsuba)

    Combined aori and faint mokkō; in katakiri engraving is a branch of sakaki (a sacred tree, Cleyera japonica) with gohei (cut-paper pendants) in silver inlay, continued over the right edge to the back; in base an Okame mask in bold incrustation of shibuichi with shakudō details and gold tasselled cords. Signed on the field at the back: konomi ni ōjite ([Japanese text], "by special desire") Kongōsai [Japanese text] Getsuzan [Japanese text], followed by an incense-burner on a stand, marked hō or takara ([Japanese text], "treasure"). (Matsuo Getsuzan, pupil of Hideoki.)
