Vitreous coating applied to the surface of a ceramic to make it impermeable or for decorative effect.

Ceramic material composed of kaolin, quartz, and feldspar which is fired to a temperature of c.1350-1400⁰c. The resulting ceramic is vitreous, translucent, and white in colour.

The Barlow Collection
The shallow conical bowl has slightly rounded sides, with an angle on the outside, and the rim has been cut into six lobes. The narrow foot is slightly tapering and the footring more shallow. The inside shows a large medallion with two carved carp among dense waves combed to form an almost abstract geometric design, with whorls in the centre and between the two fish and lobed strokes around it, suggesting crests. A broad band at the rim is plain, as is the outside. The blue-tinged glaze covers the whole piece, but leaves a wide patch on the base in the brown-burnt biscuit, where some grit is adhering.
