The Mustard Seed Garden Landscape Scroll

  • loan
  • Description

Xu Bing has compiled this landscape using images from the The Mustard Seed Garden Manual of Painting, a famous painting instruction manual published in 1679. The scroll’s opening title is written by Zhu Naizheng (born 1935), a famous painter and calligrapher and former vice president of the Central Academy of Fine Arts in Beijing. The title at the righthand end is written by Xu Bing in 'square word calligraphy'. This is a script he invented in the 1990s that reconfigures English words so that the letters form the shape of a Chinese character. He uses it for his signature. The colophon at the far right is written by Xu Bing’s contemporary Qianshen Bai, a well-known calligrapher and academic.
