The A. H. Church Collection of Japanese Sword-Guards (Tsuba)
Low-relief modelling with iroye incrustation and partial openwork, depicting the famous Chinese generals Kuan Yü (Japanese Kwanu) and Ch'ang Fei (Chōhi) in a rocky hollow to right, the former standing while the other sits reading a scroll; near by is a small cascade, and another hollow in the rock forms the kodzuka-hole; at the back are their two horses and the gnarled trunks of three big trees. Signed: Kōto no jū ("resident of Yedo") Fuji [Japanese text] Kōzui [Japanese text]. (This is perhaps Murota Kōzui, younger brother of Murota Kwanzui I, said to have been a pupil of the founder.)
