The A. H. Church Collection of Japanese Sword-Guards (Tsuba)

Mokkō; modelled mainly in sunk relief with a large ball (central on the guard) embraced by a "lion" (shishi); the eyes in gold; at back, in base, a peony spray. Signed: Ichiriūken [Japanese text] Naotoshi [Japanese text] with kakihan [Figure]. (Perhaps Morikawa N., pupil of Yangawa Naomasa.)

The guard (front) resembles very closely one of superior workmanship in the Victoria and Albert Museum, signed Gazan Yoshimasa (Sekijōken School, Group XLIV).
