  • The A.H. Church Collection of Japanese Sword-Guards (Tsuba) by Albert James Koop

The A. H. Church Collection of Japanese Sword-Guards (Tsuba)

Bold low-relief modelling and iroye; two of the sennin on a rock near a torrent--Chōkwarō seated, conjuring a horse out of his gourd bottle, and Tekkai-sennin standing, blowing forth his double; the latter, mounted on the horse, is represented in engraving as flying towards a whirlpool of cloud; at the back, pine-trees, clouds, bamboo-grass, etc. Signed: Hamano Kuzui ([Japanese text]) tsukuru. (perhaps kuzui I, d. 1787.)

A good piece, though not fine work.
