Moses fighting the giant ‘Uj

  • Description

    Pre-Islamic prophets enjoyed special favour in the Islamic tradition. Drawing on Jewish and Christian sources, the Qur’an and other Islamic texts relate the exploits of the prophet Moses, including his fight against the giant ‘Uj. ‘Uj had been sent by Pharaoh to destroy the Israelites with a huge stone in exchange for the hand of the king’s daughter. This painting captures the moment when Moses - depicted with a veiled face and a flaming halo - strikes the giant’s ankle, causing him to fall and break his head under the weight of his massive rock.
