    The Barlow Collection

    Vases with pierced holes in the foot were made in imitation of metal shapes, where the holes usually correspond with lugs at the neck, for insertion of ribbons or strings. On the present vases, they are purely decorative and give the shape an archaistic flavour.

    The vases are of octagonal section, the globular body on a splayed foot, which is pierced with two holes on opposite sides, the shoulder with a raised double collar, the splayed, slender neck with two horizontal ribs like bamboo nodes, and the rim flat and everted. The attractive, smooth yellowish-green glaze has a wide-meshed crackle and leaves only the footrings exposed in the yellowish-brown biscuit.
