    alloy of copper and gold, patinated to a dark blue-black colour

  • shibuichi

    alloy of copper and silver, patinated to a dull grey-green colour

    The A. H. Church Collection of Japanese Sword-Guards (Tsuba)

    Faint mokkō, with gently hammered-up edge; above is the cresent moon in gold, partly veiled by clouds in flat relief; below, in incrustation of shibuichi and gold, is a reed-plant, continued on the back, where there are also clouds below and two small flying birds (chidori) in shakudō, gold and silver.

    Signed eactly as the last [EAX.10306], except that the date is "early summer" (fourth month) of the same year.

    De Ath Collection. This and the previous guard [EAX.10306] are of very modern character, influenced by the fine work of the Ichijō School (Group XXXIVc).
