Literature notes
The wide rounded bowl has a flared rim and a splayed foot with broad straight-cut footring with bevelled edges, and with a hollowed-out groove around it on the outside. The light pinkish-beige body appears to have been fired at a fairly high temperature and seems to approach stoneware. It has been covered with a white slip and a transparent glaze with a bluish-green tinge, decorated with overall cobalt-blue splashes. The lower half of the sides and the underside are free of glaze and largely free of slip. -

earthenware, slip, underglaze painting

earthenware
Ceramic material made of clay which is fired to a temperature of c.1000-1200⁰c. The resulting ceramic is non-vitreous and varies in colour from dark red to yellow.

slip
A semi-fluid clay applied to a ceramic before glazing either to coat the surface or for decorative effect.

underglaze painting
Painting applied to ceramic material before a transparent, or monochrome or coloured glaze for Islamic objects, is applied. The technique was initially developed in China.
